Cherokee Mixed Bloods: Additions and Corrections to Family Genealogies of
Dr. Emmet Starr
Volume 1: Cordery, Ghigau, Ridge-Watie, Ross, Sanders and Ward
By David Keith Hampton
A portion of a major update in the work of Dr. Emmet Starr has been completed. The series will be called: Cherokee Mixed Bloods, Additions and Corrections to Family Genealogies of Dr. Emmet Starr. There were 37 family groupings in Starr's History of the Cherokee Indians, Their Legends and Folklore, published in 1921. Six of these families are in this first volume of corrections: Cordery, Ghigau (Nancy Ward), Ridge-Watie, Ross (including Shorey and McDonald), Sanders and Ward. The same number of generations as presented in Dr. Starr's book will be included, however there will be numerous corrections, with the addition of dates, places and burial information, and thousands of references. The first volume is 680 pages, hardbound, and a limited number of copies are still available for sale. CD-ROM copies will be available around June 1, 2005. The corrections presented are done from a review of many sources, the main ones being: Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) applications, Dawes Census cards and testimonies, Cherokee censuses, U. S. censuses, missionary records, cemetery tombstone readings, courthouse probate and marriage records and newspaper obituaries. It is not currently known which families will appear in the next volume.
